Thanksgiving in CT

Thanksgiving.

This is an interesting day since it is a major holiday in the US but a very compact one. No run up with weeks of advertising (like Christmas), but an intense time of food buying, prep and travel. Keeping it simple seems the best response so that its easier to focus on the “point’ which of course is being thankful.

This year it was a little different for us here in Connecticut. Elena is home on break, Jack is home while in grad school and we have Jack’s girlfriend Heidy and her younger sister Briana. In addition, it was Georgia’s turn to work a holiday at the hospital so she was in the ER from 11-9.

Georgia did lots of prep in the two days before, I made an item, and helped with some of the pies. A few other bits were on me for the actual day. We also decided to give a commercial vegan product a try as the “centerpiece” dish: Field Roast Celebration Roast (more about that later). Here was the menu:

Jack left shortly after Georgia headed for work to pick up Heidy and Brianna in Providence. They had been in Boston looking at schools and took a train to Providence. Once they were back, we had some appetizers (hummus, chips, salsa, and veggies), talked, Elena and I got a run in and all generally relaxed.

With a few hours to go I made mashed potatoes, started the oven and got squash and stuffing in. There was a quick flurry getting gravy made (thanks to Elena jumping in), because I forgot to make it. While that was happening I got the spicy green beans underway (super hot stuff, but tasty) and Elena and I started to get everything on the table. Then it was time to sit down!

The food was all delicious. The beans a little on the hot spicy side (recipe from a blogger friend) and the Celebration Roast was pretty good. We have had products like this that have been excellent but this one was a little less fabulous – but a great thing to try.  (We regularly give things like this a try and review them on our blog or Youtube). After dinner we enjoyed the pies, some drinks and football. Finally Georgia came home at about 9:30 just in time for more pie, drinks, and football!

We had a nice, fun, low-key day feeling happy to be together and thankful for the day. Hope everyone’s day was the same.

Love to you all!

Sounds like a fine day, a tasty menu, and I love the pics. A fine looking group, to be sure ! Glad that Georgia was able to get there even if a little late. I’m curious about the Celebration Roast – tell me about it, please !
