Science and Technology Magnet School

Jack is currently in the student teaching period of his Master’s program at UConn.  That means most days for weeks now he is getting up early, getting breakfast, and leaving the house by about 6am. Real working adult stuff!

Lunch Left Behind

We haven’t had a chance to drive over and see the school yet so when Jack forgot  the lunch he had packed this morning, I figured I would help him out and drive over. Its not as extravagant as it sounds since its barely 20 minutes to get there once morning traffic is gone. At about 9 this morning off I went.

Beautiful Facility

When I arrived I was really surprised. New London is a bit of a scrappy, slightly rough around the edges, medium-sized Connecticut city. This location is their main High School and, while the main school is quite large and the usual institutional looking style, the newly built magnet school (situated directly beside the main school) is an impressive glass and concrete structure. Big window walls, well-tended landscaping, and clean grounds. A surprise considering the impression one gets driving around through New London.

In addition to the lovely new magnet school building, the High School also has a nice compact football field, several baseball diamonds, a beautiful track, and a large garden that it appears they use for some of the meals in their cafeteria.

If you want to check it out on Google Earth its right here: 490 Jefferson Ave, New London CT

Anyway, I got lunch to Jack, who met me at the door and then dashed back to class. Next time, maybe a tour!

Thanks, Greg ! Good for New London to have invested in this magnet school. Student teaching at his level is not easy but I”m sure he’s doing well and handling the challenges. And it’s certainly a plus to have a new building, up-to-date lab equipment and texts. Maybe before he leaves he, or you, could get a few pictures of the interior.
I suspect he has a class or two to attend at UConn also, just to complicate his schedule.
Anyway, I’m delighted we have another teacher in the family and look forward to hearing about his experiences !

      Hi Dad,
It is really cool what they are doing there – I think its a state of CT effort, as a matter of fact. The students at the magnet come from the southeast connecticut area, not just New London.
I will be sure to post a follow up with photos of the interior before he is done with the student teaching module!
